Alcmena is a British Shorthair cattery. We have been in business for a considerable amount of time and we are registered with TICA (The International Cat Association) and FIFE (Fédération Internationale Féline), both time-honored and prestigous organizations. Yet in that short time we already have winners at TICA shows. British Short Hair cats have close to 60 colors. At Alcmena we specialize in colors including blue, lilac, red, black, chocolate and silver, all available in solid and classic tabby coat patterns. We feel that these colors reflect the beauty of the breed.
We are very careful and particular about the way we feed our cats and the way we take care of their health. All our cats have a clean bill of health and are raised on the best foods available. We also provide them with necessary vitamins and minerals so they are healthy and have a strong immune system which stays robust even after giving birth to kittens. We work closely with the local vet clinic and they recommend our cattery to people looking for a kitten or a cat.
Our breeding pairs are chosen in order ensure that our kitten to maintain, adhere to the pedigree standard for the British Shorthair, consequently our cats have won many awards.
Our cattery has been participating in the various Cat Shows held by TICA, and we are proud to have had our cats win various titles at these shows over the years. Some of our cats have won Champion, Grand Champion and Double Grand Champion titles. Such titles are very prestigious honors and demonstrate that the winners are of exceptional pedigree and most closely embody the ideal characteristics of the British Shorthair Breed. Recently our male cat received a Best Lilac cat in the North East and Third Best Lilac cat in the United States award honors.

As breeders, we try to preserve the quality of our kittens according to international standards and do not commercially produce cats for quantity.
We also do not resell kittens from other places or catteries. We do not raise our kittens in cages nor do we keep our cats in cages. They are a part of our family and roam around the house. This ensures that our kittens are very affectionate A lot of attention is given when raising new kittens. A kitten will loose its show quality if it is not fed and cared for properly. At Alcmena we bring our extensive knowledge of British Shorthair cats to the future owners and breeders. This takes a lot of effort, but we are happy to do so and make people comfortable working with us. We love our business and our cats therefore, we are commited to maintaining the utmost health of our cats. We will provide you with all the necessary support so your cats will bring you happiness for many years.
Here are a few words and pictures from some of the owners of Alcmena Cattery grown up kittens.
Hi Helen,
I just wanted to give you an update on little Chaska. She is getting more
beautiful every day and her eyes are becoming more copper. She is growing
so quickly! Over the weekend, she became friends with our Siamese. Now
they are napping together, grooming each other, and playing together. She
loves to chase, bite, and pounce on him, and he is nice enough to let her do
it. She like to steal the spot he is sleeping in and steal his toys he is
playing with. She is a lot of fun and everyone who meets her falls in love
with her beauty and sweet personality. She loves men and wants to sleep in
their laps. She sleeps with us every night. I can't thank you enough for
such a wonderful baby. She is perfect in every way.
Sincerely,
Jessica

Dear Alcmena Cattery (Helen & Alex),
We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for our wonderful Chelsea and Quincy.
The loving and nurturing environment which you provide for your cats and kittens
impressed us.
Additionally, we were extremely impressed by your holistic approach to
the wellbeing of your cattery. The emphasis you place on their natural and healthy diet
confirms your dedication. During our first appointment with you to meet and select our
kittens, we welcomed the fact that you were also interviewing us to determine if we
would be good parents to your babies.
We instantly fell in love with Chelsea and four
months later fell equally in love with Quincy. The affection they have for us and which
they show each other is incredible. It is without a doubt your hands-on approach to
rearing which shapes their loving character and wonderfully healthy start in life.
They eat, play and sleep together. They both greet us at the door each evening as we
arrive home and shadow us around the house. They are members of our family and we
treat them as such. Our friends are amazed that they appear and welcome guests to
their home.
We would never have imagined the sheer joy that Chelsea and Quincy have
brought to our lives. Helen, we can not begin to express how much your continued
support and advice has meant to us. From the early stages of our feline parenthood to
all the odd questions that may arise, you are always there at the other end of the
phone giving us the best of your best. No matter where our life's journey will
take us, we will continue to stay in contact and keep you posted on your babies;
Chelsea & Quincy. Bless you Helen for the passion you have for this magnificent breed
and passing that passion onto us.
Warmly,
Linda & Joseph Comeau

To Alcmena Cattery,
We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for our two most precious cats,
Charlie and Moses.
As you know in June 2005 we adopted 2 kittens, one Blue and one Lilac British Short Hair.
We have had cats our entire lives each one precious in their own way. However, I truly
want to let you know that these two kittens, now cats, are the sweetest, smartest, most
beautiful cats I have ever owned.
You obviously are great breeders, and I would highly recommend you to anyone looking to
adopt British Short hair Cats. Also I want to note that you are unbelievably knowledgeable
and were more then helpful in the beginning with everything from the food, litter and
medical needs.
Love the Caricato Family.

Helen,
We had never owned a British Shorthair before, but after we saw Cheeky we knew she
was the cat for us. She is sweet, affectionate (loves to have her belly rubbed) and
mild mannered. Not surprisingly, everyone who sees her cannot believe how beautiful
she is…she truly is a British Blue. After a few months, we came back to Alcmena and
fell in love with little Luna. Luna is our socialite who makes friends with everyone
and loves to cuddle. She’s full of energy and her black fur and gold eyes are striking.
In short, they are wonderful cats and their laid back and easy going personalities
always make us smile.
Keep in Touch,
J. Botto and S. Witzenburg

Hello, I just wanted you to see how big my Webster is. I wanted
to tell you how happy I am with this cat. He is such a momma's boy we love him to
death so much that I'm looking in the near future to get another blue.

Miss Buffy has become an integral part of our family the moment
we brought this little fur ball home. We could not believe how loving, affectionate,
sweet and gentle the temperament of the British Shorthair breed is. We have nicknamed
her the "Supervisor" because she is always present wherever we are, such as watching
us prepare dinner or lounging on the couch with us in the family room. She likes to
be present at every project that seems to go on in the house from wallpaper hanging
to cleaning of the house - she's is always present and seems to be supervising the
project, not to mention she likes to sleep on our bed at night. She is very playful
and gentle cat. She is virtually non-destructive to household items and is easily
trained. She is very low maintenance and enjoys being brushed. She loves our company
and we hers. Buffy likes to lounge a lot and she is a very laid back cat with great
personality. We feel that Helen and Alex done their job in breeding a cat very true
to its breed.

Our ten year old says it best, "Chloe & Zoe are the light of our family". My husband
and I were both from 'no pet' homes. I don't know who was more excited about getting
Chloe, my son or I. My husband took about a week to warm up but then he was hooked.
She is a constant companion, greeting us at the door and letting us pat her and feel
her luscious fur. At six months of age we were so in love, I discussed with Helen the
possibility of getting another. Unbeknownst to me, my husband a week earlier had already
picked out Zoe and came home and surprised us the next day. Helen never let on! They
get on beautifully. Patiently they wait at the bathroom door each morning till someone
is out of the shower. They love to sit on the wet floor watching the drips of water
roll down the glass. I could write a book!

We got Simba after our son had left for college. Simba is so much joy and fun to
be around. He is very interactive and has a lot of character. Simba never wants
to leave our sight; he enjoys playing or just being around us. He is very smart,
acts more like a dog! Simba is a very good listener also, I could tell him anything
I want, he totally understands and supports me. There is nothing like coming home
and Simba waiting at the door step just being happy to see you. We have never had
a pet before and we cannot imagine our life without one. I just want to thank you
for my fury little friend I've got from you last year.
Thank you Alcmena!

Our Marsha is GREAT. She is a wonderful animal. We never had pets in
our house before. There was a little apprehension to get a cat due our
inexperience with animals. However, when we saw this kitten we fell in
love with her. She became a part of our family. Marsha is very gentile.
There is no furniture damage and she is always clean and neat. She
understands speech and responds to our requests by doing what is asked
of her. She reflects on the mood in the family and always knows when
there is good time to approach us. There is no other cat like our
Marsha even among other British Shorthair.

Here are four pics of Greyling...you may choose what is best. He is
11 mo. old and a very smart and friendly young man. His eyes are now
copper, his lilac coat is beautiful and he has a wonderful thick tail
with faint rings on it.
We have trained him to be outside and to come inside when we call. His
weight is about 17 lbs. He has a playful habit of grabbing our ankles
(which he has inherited from his mother you said) and loves people,
especially kids. We are so thankful that you were breeding British
Shorthairs and that we found you!
He is very, very special and we adore him.
Best,
Ellen and Tom McFaul
